KUALA LUMPUR: A Publicity and Information Bureau involving leaders of all component parties in Barisan Nasional has been set up for the first time in the coalition’s history to prepare for the general election.
The national bureau will be headed by Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan while state Umno information chiefs will chair it at state level.
“This is the first time in the history of Malaysian politics that the Information bureaus of all the component parties in Barisan Nasional are coming together,” Ahmad Maslan said after the bureau’s first official meeting here yesterday.
Ahmad Maslan had been appointed by the Prime Minister to head the bureau two months ago.
“This is an indication of how near the elections are,” he said.
The first official activity of the bureau, he said, would be to go from state to state to meet party leaders and other Barisan-linked community leaders.
He said the main objective of the meetings would be to answer any issue raised, explain policies and transmit information to ‘prime movers’ in society.
However, he said, the bureau had not decided if it would allow public participation in the meetings.
The nationwide meetings are scheduled to run for two months, beginning in Kedah on Sept 10 before ending in Sarawak on Oct 30.
“We expect between 2,000 to 3,000 leaders to attend,” he said.
He added that other future activities would be to prepare the party’s election machinery and its ‘cyber machinery’.
