KUALA LUMPUR: Umno members should always be humble and friendly to the other races although the party has the largest membership in the country, said its information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan.
He reminded members that their friendly approach was vital for the party's future as it would earn the party the much-needed support and votes.
He said that although the party had 3.4 million members, only 3 million are registered as voters.
"There are 12 million registered voters in the country and our members only represent a quarter of the voters.
"We cannot win the country just on three million members," Ahmad said after opening the 7th Malay Agenda Seminar held on the sidelines of the Umno General Assembly 2011 at Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.
The seminar was titled "Islam and the Malays" after the post-13th General Assembly.
Ahmad added that Umno members should go out and convince the people to vote for Barisan Nasional.
"Umno members should be nice to the Chinese, Indian and the fence-sitters.
"We need their votes as their support is important."
Ahmad also accused the other opposition parties, especially DAP, of being chauvinistic in their politics.
"The majority of the population are Malays and with the 12 per cent Bumiputera from Sabah and Sarawak, we have 67 per cent.
"Although we have 30 per cent Bumiputera, yet the DAP do not seem to respect our numbers and want to turn the country into something else without taking into account the interests of the others," he said.
