'Felda transformation to be used as a model'

ALOR GAJAH: The successful transformation of the Felda settlements in the country would be used as a model for the nation's transformation programmes.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Ahmad Maslan said the success of transforming thick forest areas into a notable rubber and oil palm plantations throughout Malaysia, could be shared and used for the good of the nation.
"When the idea for the Felda settlements was mooted by former prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, vast areas of the forest were cleared into barren land and settlers were brought in to cultivate rubber and oil palm.
"Now, under the leadership of current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Felda has grown tremendously to be a notable success story not only in the country but also throughout the world.
"This is why the Government would be using the success of Felda for the nation's transformation programmes.
He said this after launching the Program Seranta Serancangan Bersama Media -- Edisi Rewang Korban Perdana by Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam at Felda Tun Ghafar Hutan Percha, near here, yesterday.
The programme saw the participation of some 50 members of the media and 1,500 Felda settlers.
It is organised by the Seranta (Felda) of the Prime Minister's Department, Malacca State Government and Felda together with Felda Tun Ghafar Hutan Percha's Village Development and Security Committee, Felda Womens' Association, Felda Youth Council, Alor Gajah Umno and the Alor Gajah Municipal Council.
The two-day programme started on Monday with the participants being handed over to their 'foster parents'.
This was followed by preparations for the rewang. (Rewang in Javanese language means helping.)
