THE narrow lanes in Air Baloi subdistrict in Pontian are riddled with potholes, endangering the lives of children who cycle to school and also making it difficult for motorists to drive through, especially after a downpour.
Lorong Ahtim, Kampung Sangkar 2 Besar, Kampung Sangkar 2 Kecil and Lorong Haji Ahmad Sitam are some of the neighbourhoods in the subdistrict affected by this problem.

Resident, Monzali Hilap, 65, from Lorong Ahtim said farmers also use the three-kilometre lane as the main route to transport their crop to nearby towns.

"Oil palm fruits are transported by lorries via this lane and we urge authorities to solve this problem as soon as possible," said Monzali during a visit by Pontian member of parliament Datuk Ahmad Maslan to the affected neighbourhoods recently.

Maslan, who is also Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, also inspected a futsal court at Kampung Putri Menangis, Benut.

Kampung Sangkar 2 Besar resident, Kamalullail Mohamad, 50, said any damage to the main lane of the village would increase the risk of road accidents.

He said children who ride their bicycles to school use the lane, and the damaged lane could be dangerous for them.

Ahmad said the problem would be referred to the relevant authority at the soonest.

"I sympathised with the problem faced by the people in this village, as they face hardship whenever they ply the lane," said Ahmad.
