ALOR SETAR: The Juara Rakyat programme, aimed at bringing Barisan Nasional leaders closer to the people, will be held three times a month from now on.
The programme that started in January 2010 used to be a monthly event.
Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan, who is also the Barisan publicity and information head, said 2,057 Juara Rakyat programmes were held last year.
“We want to meet them and solve their problems,” he said at the Kedah Barisan information programme here yesterday.
However, Ahmad lamented that there were some Umno divisions that were not carrying out the programmes as they were not confident that the Barisan would win the next general election.
“They should not be deterred by such feelings. We will not penalise them but we appreciate those who have made a lot of effort,” he said.
Ahmad said Umno divisional information chiefs were heading the Juara Rakyat information secretariats in their respective areas for the smooth running of the programmes.
On the Election Commission's decision not to make a candidate's health a pre-requisite in the election, Ahmad said he agreed with the move.
“I don't think Umno will make it a condition (for their candidates) as in each term there would be by-elections,” he said.
