Nationwide briefings on GST - Ahmad Maslan

PETALING JAYA: The government will give clear and systematic briefings on the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to all levels of society, said Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

The briefings, led by his ministry and the Royal Malaysia Customs Department, will be held in all states including in interior areas and for groups such as traders, non-governmental organisations, political parties and academics, he said. Speaking to reporters after a briefing on Budget 2014 for staff of the Inland Revenue Board (LHDNM) here today, Ahmad said public response to the announcement regarding the abolition of the sales tax to be replaced by the GST has been generally positive, adding the GST would not necessarily raise the prices of goods as claimed by some detractors. Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in tabling Budget 2014, said the GST, which would come into effect on April 1, 2015 at six per cent, is a fair and comprehensive tax system that would benefit all Malaysians. -- BERNAMA
