Cawangan UMNO Disaran Tubuh Biro IT - Ahmad Maslan

Distinguished Guests

Ladies and Gentlemen

First of all, I welcome and acknowledge the contribution made by Temasek Foundation International (TFI) and Singapore Corporation Enterprise (SCE) in undertaking this collaborative joint training programme with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry Malaysia (MITI). The programme is now in its second year.

The Economic Policy Leaders Programme (EPLP) was first introduced in 2016. A total of 124 officials from MITI and its agencies have participated in six (6) EPLP workshops last year. The workshops focused on economic and industrialization transformation, investment promotion and trade facilitation.

The programme, aimed at building talents in MITI and its agencies, is jointly funded by the Malaysian and Singaporean Governments.

This is the second year of MITI’s collaboration with SCE and TFI. This time, focusing on the automotive sector, revolving around vehicle environmental policy, technology and innovation of Energy Efficient Vehicles; also known as EEVs.

Today’s workshop on “Urban Transportation and E-Mobility in Malaysia: Smart Mobility towards EEV” will be held from 8 – 10 November 2017 over three days in Kuala Lumpur.

I was briefed that in this workshop, it is the first time that Government agencies such as the Ministry of Transport (MOT), Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs (KPDNKK), Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), Economy Planning Unit (EPU) and the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GREENTECH) are taking part in the EPLP programme.

For that reason, I hope that all of the local participants will take full advantage of the sharing sessions during the course of the programme. We hope you will in turn provide new ideas and policies towards establishing Malaysia as a regional EEV hub by the year 2020.

Please seize this golden opportunity to expand your outlook, share your learning experience and transform it into practical ideas to be applied in your daily tasks and responsibilities. As the saying goes, you get what you give. In the same vein, that principle holds true for this programme.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The National Automotive Policy (NAP) places emphasis on green initiatives, with the ultimate objective of establishing Malaysia as a regional EEV hub by the year 2020.

In this context, EEVs are not limited to electric alone, but any vehicle that meets a set standard of fuel consumption and carbon emission level. Our EEV policy is tailored towards meeting the future demands in vehicle technology. This includes the need to produce skilled human resources, investments in technology and sustainable mobility.

Going forward, the Government recognizes the importance of digitalisation and connectivity as we move towards embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) in Malaysia that will fundamentally change the way we live, work, and relate to one another.

The future of the automotive industry will undeniably evolve towards digitalisation, with “Internet of Things” (IOT) and Big Data Management becoming an increasingly ubiquitous feature, to remain competitive.

We will see automation being increasingly applied across various sectors, including the automotive sector. In its scale, scope, and complexity, the transformation will be unlike anything we have experienced before. We do not yet know just how it will unfold, but one thing is clear: the response to it must be integrated and comprehensive.

We also observe that as the automotive industry continues to progress toward autonomous and semi-autonomous capability vehicles, there are opportunities to further improve Malaysia’s own public transport landscape with wider usage of EEVs.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I hope that today’s workshop will spur debates and discussions on this important topic. This in turn, will provide innovative ideas to the experts and policymakers gathered here today, on the way forward, for the automotive sector.

In concluding, let me once again, express my sincere appreciations to MAI, TFI, SCE and all other parties who have contributed to the success of this programme.

Now. It is with great pleasure that I officially kick off the Workshop on Urban Transportation and E-Mobility in Malaysia: Smart Mobility towards EEV. I wish you all a fruitful learning experience!

Thank you. (END)
