Members of the Media

Ladies and gentlemen,

A very good evening to all of you.

Let me first express thanks Lulu Hypermarket & Department Store for inviting me to be part of their first CSR Project. I am indeed honoured to speak at this important milestone event in their corporate annals.

When Lulu Hypermarket opened its first outlet in Malaysia, which is Lulu Hypermarket Kuala Lumpur last Ramadhan, on 25 June 2016, it aims to touch the lives of Malaysians, and this evening, we witness its first Hari Raya CSR Programme being launched.

There are 60 orphans and single mothers who will benefit from this inaugural programme. Some of them rely entirely on charitable contributions and are breadwinners holding low-income jobs. The grocery vouchers worth RM150 each, would help to meet some of the basic needs and ease financial burdens.

Business is not just about making money, as vital as it is. It is also the most powerful force for social progress. It can help us to smash poverty, to raise horizons, to drive the innovations, products and services that make our lives better, longer and happier.

Ladies and gentlemen

Therefore, the Ministry of International Trade and Industries (MITI) encourage companies in Malaysia to become more aware of corporate social responsible (CSR) and to implement CSR strategies that focuses on the significant challenges that we, as a society, will face in the future. In so doing, they make important contributions to society.

Corporate social responsibility is an absolutely vital part of my mission for the government which is to build a bigger and stronger society. The society is about people recognizing that they have obligations beyond just paying their taxes and obeying the law.

Not just doing no harm but doing good, and this applies to businesses as much as it does to individuals. Personal and business responsibilities go hand in hand.

What’s really going to change this nation is collaboration, cooperation; businesses, charities, individuals working with each other and with the government to make life better.

Ladies and gentlemen

Not just government action but social action. Not just government responsibility but also personal and corporate responsibility. That is going to make the difference to our country.

Therefore, I am confident that with the good work put in by Lulu Hypermarket for CSR, more companies, particularly retail outlets, will soon recognize the value of CSR and incorporate CSR in their business strategies.

Particularly when consumers today are much more discerning and many companies know the value of being good corporate citizens.

Taking a proactive stand, Lulu Hypermarket has taken community service a step further by engaging and touching the lives of the local entrepreneurs by providing space, bring their products to Hypermarket’s other 132 outlets in GCC countries.

Being the first halal hypermarket, Lulu Hypermarket supports Bumiputera SME and entrepreneurs, and encourage them to sell their products at Lulu locally and internationally.

Ladies and gentlemen

Opportunely, Lulu Hypermarket is ranked by Deloitte as one of the top 7 fastest growing retailers in the world.

Lulu Group currently operate 136 stores across the GCC, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and employees more than 40,000 people from different nationalities and is also the one of the largest retail chain in the Middle East.

The Lulu Group’s expansion plan includes opening 10 hypermarkets in Malaysia and investing RM1.3 billion (US$ 300 million) in Malaysia. Lulu plans to open stores in all states in Malaysia, providing 5,000 jobs for Malaysians. The next store openings will be at Setia City Mall Shah Alam, Bangi Gateway, Taman Perling Johor Bahru. This means tremendous business growth opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

I applaud Lulu Hypermarket for its corporate social responsibility and entrepreneur development approach which we hope many more will emulate. On that note, congratulations to Lulu Hypermarket management for embarking on this programme.

Ladies and gentlemen

To the local entrepreneurs, whose lives Lulu Hypermarket have touched, I hope you will find meaning and fulfillment in participating in this programmed and form lasting friendship with Lulu Hypermarket.

I want to conclude by reiterating my core message to you today: free enterprise is the best imaginable force for improving our lives and it has a powerful role to play in renewing our country.

As we go forward together, I want the relationship between the government and businesses to continue as it started: not leading you, but collaborating and cooperating with you. Not bossing from the top down, but encouraging the changes you’re making from the bottom up.

Working together for more responsible business, for a bigger and stronger society and above all, for a better country.

Thank you very much indeed for listening.
